Coda Quilted Coat

Last year, I had the wonderful opportunity to contribute to the Coda Quilted Coat Pattern by Love Notions. I wrote a pattern for the back quilt block that comes with the pattern (shown below), and have since made two of my own versions of this quilt and hosted a Sew a Long in September of 2023. While the Sew a Long is now over, you can view all of the tips and tricks that I shared for making this coat in this blog series! Note that the Sew a Long posts require the Coda Quilted Coat Pattern.

I’ve been in the quilting world for quite a while, and yet I had never found a quilt coat pattern that I was excited to try until I saw this pattern. I had a few concerns with a quilt coat - I was worried that the lack of stretch in the arms and shoulders wouldn’t be comfortable for me, that finishing the seams the way most quilt coat patterns call for to sounded difficult and uncomfortable, and that my coat would just end up in the back of my closet unworn. However, I was able to fit my coat and use materials that made the whole thing very comfy.

I wanted a coat that provided warmth but not too much, had very deep pockets, was a bit longer than the original pattern, and had plenty of room in the sleeves and body for movement. This pattern is amazing as written, but I decided to make size adjustments to account for all of these needs and created a longer back panel, and both of my coats turned out wonderfully! In this blog series, I’ll walk you through many possible adjustments and share what I did personally.

I made two versions of this coat for myself.

Version 1

For this version, I used Fableism Sprout Woven fabrics in Storm and Arctic with Fableism Trellis for the lining. I lengthened the back by a bit over 4”, and used this alternate back pattern.

This version of the coat is a bit bigger and boxier on me, because I wanted to be able to fit bulky layers underneath and wear this coat when doing some gardening in fall and spring.

For my second version, I tapered in the waist, shoulders and sleeves a bit for a more fitted look.

Version 2

I made this version of the quilt during the sew a long, and decided to use a Landscape Quilt Class panel for the back.

For this one, I again used Fableism fabrics but this time I tried their Nocturne Chambray line, and it was so soft and lovely! I used Cinnabar for the outer, a fat quarter bundle for the landscape quilt on the back, and Fableism Arcade for the lining. This coat fits a bit slimmer than my first one, but is still wonderfully soft and warm.
